Why Is My Ductless Heating System Leaking Water?

Ductless Heating System Leaking

If you have a ductless mini-split system in your Abbeville, LA, home that leaks water, you may not know why. Figuring our why requires an understanding of how your mini-split system works. Here are three possible reasons your ductless heating system is leaking and how to stop it:

Leaking Ductless System Has a Dirty Filter

A dirty air filter is a common cause of a leaky ductless mini-split air handler. A dirty filter obstructs airflow through your air handler, leading to a frozen coil. When the coil defrosts, the water overwhelms the condensate drain and leaks from the system.

You can solve this problem by removing the air filter and washing it. You can use a sink sprayer to do the job. After the filter dries thoroughly, insert it and the water leak should stop.

Damaged Drain Pan in the Ductless HVAC System

You’ll find a condensate drain pan in the bottom of each of your mini-split’s air handlers. Their job is to catch condensation as it drips from each mini-split’s evaporator coil. If one of your drain pans develops a crack, it can cause a water leak.

Unfortunately, a cracked condensate drain pan isn’t something you can fix yourself. If you suspect that a cracked drain pan is the source of your leak, schedule an HVAC repair appointment. One of our expert service technicians will confirm the problem and replace the damaged part.

Clogged Condensate Drain Line

If your condensate drain pans aren’t the cause of your leak, it might be the drain line. Each air handler has a drain line that carries water from its pan to the outside of your home. If those lines clog, you can end up with a leak.

If you can access either end of the problematic drain line, you can use a Shop-Vac to try to clear it. Or, you can use some diluted white vinegar to open the drain. Otherwise, you’ll need the help of a professional HVAC service technician.
